Carmel Street

The Carnell brothers of Obi Obi and Maleny, William, Pritchard and Stanley, served with 42nd, 49th and 12th Battalions respectively on the Western Front during the First World War.

Stanley was the only one to return from the War, decorated with the Military Medal for “great courage and utter disregard of personal safety” in attending, during an action in late August 1918, to wounded members of this company whilst under heavy machine gun fire.

Sadly, Pritchard had been killed in action, also in France, just one week earlier, whilst William had been killed in Belgium in July 1917.

Their story is testament to the devastating effects that “the war to end all wars” had on small communities throughout Australia.
