The ship Sovereign was lost in heavy seas and with considerable loss of life at South Passage on March 11, 1847. Subsequent to this tragedy, amid calls for a lighthouse to be built at the northern end of Moreton Bay, marine surveyor and Brisbane police magistrate Captain John Charles Wickham charted the area.
He bestowed the Caloundra area’s first name, Wickham Point, at this time.
However, many more wrecks were to occur before the first lighthouse was built at Cape Moreton in 1857.
