Hon MP Mr Paul Lucas
William Landsbrough was born in 1825 on the family property “Lamerough” in Ayrshire Scotland.
He explored Queensland extensively, was chosen by both the Victorian and Queensland governments to lead a search for Burke and Willis in 1861, and was the first person to cross Australia North to South in 1862.
For his services he was awarded a land grant from the Queensland government, choosing some 2000 acres of land in the area now known as Golden Beach and Pelican Waters, which he named “Loch Lamerough” after his native home.
In 1865 William Landsborough was appointed to Albert River Gulf M.L.A. , police magistrate and later crown lands commissioner. He returned to live at Lamerough in 1860. Passing away in 1866, he was buried in the area now occupied by the Golden Beach shops, but was later re-interned at Toowong Cemetery.
