The Whitsunday's are a group of 74 islands
and are boarded by the Great Barrier Reef, in Queensland Australia.
They are 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Brisbane
The island’s name comes from the journals of Captain James Cook who sailed through the area on 04 June 1770. He christened the largest island in honour of the date he arrived, Whit Sunday, the seventh Sunday after Easter. (The name stuck even after it was discovered that a date error meant it was actually Monday when Cook’s ship, the Endeavour, arrived.)
The Islands were formed by volcanic action and after the ice age when the sea level rose it left coastal peaks as islands.
Many islands are uninhabited, and out of the 74 only 8 have resorts. Hamilton Island is the most well known and has an airport
located on it.
Airlie Beach is on the mainland and the islands are easily accessible from here. Airlie Beach has many restaurants and hotels,
a beach and the Airlie lagoon, it also has an early morning market on Saturday.

Travel from Pelican Waters
By Car |
The travel time by car is approximately 12 hours plus breaks on the way.
Follow the Bruce Highway, a straight road which takes you all the way to Airlie Beach.
A recommended overnight stop is at Rockhampton which is approximately half way to Airlie Beach.
A great place to stay at is The Edge, a luxury apartment hotel which has views looking over the Fitzroy River.
The Edge Restaurant and Bar next door, is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
7 days a week and has a modern, interior design with a relaxed atmosphere.
In Rockhampton I would recommend a visit to Capricorn Caves, Heritage Village and a quick photo stop as you cross the Tropic of Capricorn on Gladstone Road. |

Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island with flights from Brisbane operated by Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Qantas Link.

Where to Stay
There are many Resorts, Hotels, Holiday Rentals and Caravan Parks with accommodation that is easy to find for any budget, whether
you choose to stay on the mainland or on one of the eight Islands Resorts.
A recommended stay is at the Coral Sea Resort ( images below ) on Airlie Beach, where the staff are very welcoming, with a great
restaurant on the waters edge.
One of the web sites is the Whitsunday's tourism web site which gives information on places to stay and visit.

What to do
The activities are endless on the Whitsunday's, from relaxing to sailing to reef adventures.
The Whitsunday Tourism Web site gives further information.
The most recommended is a scenic flight of the Barrier Reef where the Heart Reef can be seen , it is truly amazing and well worth seeing. White Haven beach is magic from above too.
Air Whitsunday operate flights throughout the day.
Fact: It was an Air Whitsunday pilot who first saw the Heart Reef in 1975. The Heart Reef is in fact one of many coral bommies that make up the Great Barrier Reef and is only 17 metres in diameter. It can only be seen aerially as from sea level it is just like any of the other bommies that neighbour it.
The Heart Reef is an extremely popular icon amongst local and international travelers. To really make the most of this romantic piece of Australian landscape Air Whitsunday suggest a scenic flight atop the Heart Reef whilst also taking in the surrounding beauty of Hardy Lagoon (the most photographed reef of the Great Barrier Reef), Hook Reef, the River (aptly named for its deep blue channel) and Bait Reef. Follow this up with a flight around the pure white silica sands of Whitehaven Beach, it is truly amazing to view the long stretch of beach from above.
See the Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach in the Residents Photo Gallery below.
Have a look at a Pelican Waters Residents Photo Gallery and see the amazing Whitsunday's on a visit
in June 2010.
